Military Policy for LASIK/PRK
Each branch of the US Military now has its own policy for Vision Correction Surgery using both LASIK and/or PRK (PRK differs from LASIK only in the way the cornea is exposed to the Laser. A flap is created with LASIK, while PRK removes the epithelial skin covering the cornea). Indeed, most branches of the Military even pay for LASIK (or PRK) prior to sending their warriors into harms way. Members of our Armed Forces find that long hours in harsh climates with dirt, dust, and debris from explosive devices make contact lenses and glasses inappropriate and even dangerous.
Branch Policy
A summary of the current policies for various branches follows.
These policies change, so each individual must do their homework and get
prior approval for their LASIK. If you are contemplating Military
Service, be sure you understand what is permitted by the Service Branch
you are interested in prior to having LASIK. For instance, PRK (aka
"surface treatment") is permitted by the US Navy for all Pilots and
Special Warfare soldiers, while LASIK/PRK is allowed for most other
personnel. In contrast, the Air Force and Army provide waivers allowing
LASIK and/or PRK for aviators and most personnel. Indeed, NASA in many
instances allows LASIK and/or PRK for its astronauts.
Military
LASIK/PRK candidates must follow certain protocols and get prior approval for Vision Correction Surgery.
Shofner Vision Care's Dr. Kevin Johnson of Nashville participated in
the Air Force PRK/LASIK Evaluation team and can also help guide you
toward obtaining the information you need to pursue LASIK or PRK. Dr.
Stewart Shofner, also in Nashville, has performed over 40,000 LASIK/PRK
procedures including many members of the US Armed Forces.
