Dr. Stewart Shofner of Shofner Vision Center in Nashville has seen a tripling of patients referred by the Veterans Administration over the last six months. The influx of new veterans is overwhelming many VA clinics and has increased wait times for vets that seek medical treatment. VA centers are directing patients to civilian clinics such as Shofner Vision Center. Dr. Shofner says, "We are pleased that the VA is allowing patients to seek care at facilities like ours while also working so hard on behalf of our veterans."

Veteran Stats
New figures released by Veterans Affairs show far more veterans are waiting longer to see doctors than initially reported. A VA system of 150 hospitals and 820 outpatient clinics treats about 6 million veterans each year and has 9 million enrolled as patients. According to the National Center for Veteran Analysis and Statistics, over 521,000 veterans reside in the volunteer state. "It is impressive that the VA has significantly improved its backlog of cases and we are proud to be of service to the VA and our veterans," says Dr. Shofner.

The reason for this increase may come as a surprise. While the nation's total population of veterans is declining, as World War II and Korean War generations pass, an aging population combined with the increase of new veterans from the most recent wars has led to steady increases in outpatient appointments to nearly 85 million a year. "No veteran should have to wait to receive earned benefits," VA Secretary Erik K Shinseki said.
