Common Signs of Cataracts

The health of your eyes is very important for obvious reasons, and while you do everything possible to help maintain it, over time, you may become further at risk for developing eye-related conditions, such as cataracts. Cataracts are attributed with being the leading cause of blindness in the world, and though the condition can have very negative repercussions it can often be successfully treated and your vision restored, the earliest it is done the better the treatment can be. Outlined below are some of the common signs and symptoms of the condition, but if you are concerned about cataracts and would like to learn more you can reach out to Shofner Vision Center with Dr. Stewart Shofner in Nashville, TN.

Cataracts form over the lens of your eye and can cloud your vision over time, eventually leading to complete vision loss in some. These are formed as the proteins in your eye form clumps that block the light from the retina.

If these begin to form just away from the center of your eye it's possible that you may not even notice your vision becoming affected. But the most common symptoms include blurring, sensitivity to light and glare, and poor night vision.

As the cataract progresses it may be possible for yourself or others to see it formed over your eyes, appearing in shades of gray to completely white.

Treatment for Cataracts in Nashville, TN

Surgically removing the cataract is often recommended if it is already affecting your ability to perform daily activities or if there is the possibility that it will greatly impact your vision. This treatment is highly successful and generally very safe, but your doctor may suggest other ways of correcting the symptoms if surgery is not a viable option.

If you are concerned about your vision and want to know if cataract treatment can help, you can schedule a consultation with Dr. Shofner of Shofner Vision Center in Nashville, TN, by dialing (615) 249-7381.
